If you're craving a break from the daily hustle, this is your sign to book that getaway. Travel is more than a luxury—it’s self-care. Whether you're a solo female traveler, planning a girls’ trip, or finally taking that dream vacation, thoughtful planning is the key to a stress-free and fulfilling experience.
As a single mother who loves to travel (both with and without my kiddo), I have curated the ultimate travel planning checklist that will help you organize your next trip while supporting your mental, emotional, and financial well-being.
From being flexible with your travel dates to dining like a local, you can enjoy your sweet escape to the fullest with a little extra planning. Here are some of my best travel tips to get you started.
Go through our travel checklist to make sure all the essentials are covered for your next big vacation.
Consider an Alternate Location as Your Dream Destination
Yes, you can still have your dream vacation without maxing out your credit cards. Instead of heading straight to popular hotspots like Paris or the Maldives, consider alternatives that are just as breathtaking, at a fraction of the cost. Are you looking to indulge in French food? Ditch the flight to Paris and head to Montreal instead. Enjoy the French charm without the transatlantic flight.
Travel tip: Always factor in destination-specific costs such as food, drinks, and entertainment in your travel planning checklist.
Travel During the Off-Season for Fewer Crowds and Lower Prices
Did you dedicate an entire Pinterest Board to a particular destination? Consider going in the off-season to offset some expenses. A “rainy” season could mean an afternoon shower. That leaves the rest of your day free for exploration or relaxation.
Here's another perk. Off-season travel means cheaper hotel rates and a possible beach all to yourself. For wellness travelers, less-crowded destinations offer the space to fully recharge and reconnect with yourself.
Book Smart and Save on Flights
Flights are usually what gets the ball rolling when travel planning. They are also often one of the most expensive parts of the trip, but it doesn’t have to be.
There are many travel websites you could use to get a good deal on a flight. Some include Kayak, The Flight Deal, and Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). Some services even send you notifications with cheap flights from your home airport!
Pay attention to the fine print when booking your super-cheap flight. Keep an eye on things such as extra travel bag fees and no-refund policies. If you see a flight to Rome for $350, it might be worth packing a backpack to avoid the extra baggage fees.
Not the waiting-around type? Then don't wait for a deal to land in your inbox. Instead, search for flights on less congested departure or return days. Mondays or Tuesdays are rumored to be cheaper than any other day of the week.
If you are flexible on a destination, use Google Flights’ “Explore” feature. There, you can find deals to several destinations based on any particular date you have in mind.
Find a Cozy, Affordable Place to Stay
Hotels are great, but they’re not the only option. Have you experienced the peace of mind that comes with staying in an Airbnb or VRBO? You could be missing out. These platforms offer a wide variety of spaces, often at better prices, especially when split among family or friends.
Love animals? Here’s how you can pet sit your way around the world. Consider being a house sitter with a service like Trusted House Sitters. You can stay at incredible homes for free in exchange for looking after a friendly pet. You’d be surprised to find yourself in some exotic locations if you are willing to watch a few animals.
Eat Like a Local (And Save Money While You’re At It)
The biggest pleasure in life is food. It’s also the best part of the entire vacation experience for some.
Treat yourself to the best food in town. Remember, you don’t have to dine at five-star restaurants to experience the best bites.
Tap into your inner Yelp Queen or Google Reviews to discover popular local spots in the area. It might just be the street food in Bangkok for authentic and budget-friendly meals. Your wallet will thank you.
Travel Tip: Don’t shy away from food markets—they’re great for snacks, souvenirs, and cultural immersion
Embrace Your Inner Tourist
Yes, you read that right. Being a tourist does have its perks, especially when you know where to look.
Google “[destination] tourism office” before you go on your trip. See what perks you could receive as a visitor. Local tourism boards often provide discounted entry admission to museums, free walking tours, and insider tips for popular attractions.
Budget Ahead and Travel Guilt-Free
If you’re dreaming of a $3,000 vacation, start saving now—and make your money work for you.
Travel savings tips:
Set a monthly savings goal
Open a high-yield savings account (look for 4%+ APY as of 2025)
Automate deposits so you don’t have to think about it
When your trip arrives, you’ll have the funds set aside, stress-free. Feel like an extra marg? Go right ahead. You’ve earned it, boo.
Travel Is Self-Care—Plan Like It
Planning your vacation with intention supports more than your itinerary—it supports you. Whether you’re off to a quiet cabin in the mountains or a lively beach town, use this checklist to create a trip that rejuvenates your spirit, respects your budget, and brings you joy.
